The estimated cost was far beyond what Daniel could comfortably afford.
Daniel suggested a smaller wedding.
Victoria refused.
“This is the most important day of my life,” she told him. “I’m not going to look back at my wedding photos and wish we had done more.”
Daniel tried to explain that they needed to save money for their future.
Victoria’s response was simple.
“Your mother has money, doesn’t she?”
The Cost of Keeping Up Appearances
Eleanor did have savings. They were the result of decades of work, careful spending, and a modest inheritance from her late husband.
She had intended to use some of that money to renovate her home and travel after retirement.
But when Daniel told her how much the wedding mattered to Victoria, Eleanor made a decision.
She offered to contribute.
“I want you to start your marriage without a mountain of debt,” she explained. “I’ll cover the wedding expenses I can afford.”
Victoria immediately brightened.
“That’s incredibly generous of you.”
For the first time in months, she hugged Eleanor.
But Eleanor soon discovered that Victoria’s gratitude had an expiration date.
Before long, the original wedding budget had grown by thousands of dollars. Victoria requested upgraded flowers, additional ballroom decorations, a more expensive photographer, and a custom-designed entrance display.
Whenever Eleanor questioned an expense, Victoria reminded her that the money was supposed to be a gift.
“You said you wanted us to have a beautiful wedding,” Victoria would say. “I’m just making sure we get what you promised.”
Eleanor eventually stopped asking questions.
She paid the deposits, settled several invoices, and arranged the remaining payments directly with the vendors. The major contracts and outstanding balances were under her name.
She kept copies of every receipt.
Not because she expected trouble.
But because she had learned, after years of managing a household alone, that it was always wise to know where one’s money went.
