Now, standing in front of him, she needed only one sentence.
“I spent three years protecting your reputation while you made me afraid of my own home.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You know I never wanted things to go this far.”
Grace’s eyes filled, but she did not look away.
“Neither did I.”
He opened his mouth.
She continued.
“But you kept expecting me to forgive you before you ever changed. You kept expecting me to hide what happened so everyone could keep thinking you were a good man.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
“And now what? You think you’ve won?”
Grace shook her head.
“No. I think I’m finally allowed to stop losing.”
Rebecca gently guided her toward the exit.
Grace did not look back.
Behind her, Nathan remained in the courthouse corridor, surrounded by lawyers and people who had just witnessed the collapse of the story he had spent months constructing.
For the first time, he could not control what Grace said.
And for the first time, she did not feel responsible for what happened to his reputation.
12. The Life She Built After Leaving
The divorce took several more months.
There were arguments over finances, property, and the terms of the separation. Nathan continued to contest parts of Grace’s account, and the court addressed the remaining issues through the appropriate proceedings.
Grace did not receive a magical victory in which every problem disappeared.
She had bills to pay. She had to rebuild her financial independence. Some friends distanced themselves because they preferred not to get involved. Others apologized for believing Nathan’s polished public image without asking what Grace had been experiencing.
The hardest work happened after the hearing.
Grace had to learn how to make ordinary decisions without anticipating someone’s anger.
She had to learn that she could disagree with another person without deserving punishment.
